Challenge

To create an app to help families navigate an immersive Disney Wish UK experience, an event run by leading charity Make-A-Wish® UK.

Make-A-Wish® UK was established to support children and young people diagnosed with a serious illness or life-limiting condition, by granting them their dearest wish.

The Make-A-Wish team asked us to create an event app for their Disney Wish UK experience, a unique opportunity for children to meet their Disney heroes. They wanted an app that would improve convenience and add a little extra magic for families while making life easier for organisers by streamlining schedule coordination.

How we helped

Totem’s developers and creative team sat down with the event organisers to plan out how the app needed to function and what it might look like, including animated video backgrounds. A flexible approach meant that we could turn features on and off as the client required them.

In just six weeks we had designed and built an event-ready app.

Streamlining schedule coordination

The event app allows Make-a-Wish to easily manage family schedules by assigning cohorts of forty families to six different schedules across two days. The app’s admin functionality allows for easy rescheduling if families miss a particular activity or need to reschedule an entire day.

Bringing an exciting digital experience to families

Personalised schedules – families can view their schedules and see key information about activities including likely sensory stimulation levels so they know what to expect.

QR code scanning – families could use a QR code to check into activities and collect a virtual badge. Personalised certificates were issued at the end of the event.

Meal pre-ordering – families can pre-order their meals and make notifications of dietary requirements.

Event navigation – maps, FAQs and videos that introduce the volunteer elves were included as well as key logistical information.

In the weeks leading up to the event, families were sent WhatsApp messages inviting them to download the app, with push notifications subsequently letting them know about elements turned on one by one in the run up to the big day.

The outcome

Over 200 families attended the event which ran over the course of three weeks. Feedback from the families and volunteers about the app experience was very positive.

Event organisers and volunteers can now dedicate more time interacting with children to spread joy, rather than troubleshooting issues, providing directions and trying to manage schedules on paper and Excel.
